Maybe We Should Foreclose Indonesia

by Commodore on October 30, 2010

Move

Indonesia is a beautiful place filled with majestic landscapes, unique cultures and 17,508 islands.  But lately, it has also been the landing spot for the finger of God.  Earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides and tsunamis seem to be an all too common part of everyday life over there.  It’s not getting any better.

Indonesia’s military forced villagers off the slopes of the country’s most volatile volcano Saturday, carrying some away screaming as the mountain sent clouds of gray ash cascading down its slopes in its most powerful explosion yet.  Hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the west, meanwhile, relief workers said a total of 135 people missing since a tsunami hit a remote Indonesian island chain have been found alive or have returned to their villages after fleeing to the hills to escape the giant wave. There are still 163 missing and 413 dead from the tsunami, officials said.

I can’t imagine investors are fighting over getting their hands on Indonesian property.  Look what this country has had to slalom over the past 6 years.

_ March 6: An earthquake strikes Sumatra Island, killing at least 70 people and damaging hundreds of buildings.
_ March 3: Landslides triggered by days of heavy rain kill at least 40 people in eastern Indonesia.
_ Feb. 1: Rivers in the capital, Jakarta, burst their banks, submerging parts of the city in water up to 12 feet deep, killing 57 and displacing 450,000.
_ Dec. 29, 2006: A ferry sinks in a storm, killing more than 400 people in the Java Sea
_ Dec. 23, 2006: Heavy rain touches off floods that kill more than 100 people and displaces over 400,000 people.
_ July 17, 2006: An earthquake triggers a tsunami off Java island’s southern coast, killing at least 600 people._ June 19, 2006: Floods and mud flows kill up to 300 people in southern Sulawesi province.
_ May 27, 2006: An earthquake in central Java kills at least 5,800 people and injures more than 36,000.
_ May 2006: A series of explosions spew hot ash down the slopes of Mount Merapi forcing 15,000 villagers to flee.
_ May 2006: A mud eruption at a drilling shaft on Java displaces more than 11,000 people and inundates villages and factories, spewing a million oil drums of muck a day.
_ Jan. 4, 2006: Some 200 people are killed in a landslide on Java.
_ March 28, 2005: More than 900 people are killed and tens of thousands are left homeless when an earthquake hits Nias, Banyak and Simeulue islands off the coast of Sumatra.
_ Dec. 26, 2004: An earthquake sets off a tsunami that kills more than 160,000 people in Indonesia, mostly in Aceh province on Sumatra.

Hey God, chill out man.  WTF.

The Most Tasteless Ad, Ever

by Commodore on September 2, 2009

That's heartfelt.

That's heartfelt.

The above ad was created by the firm, “DDS Brazil” for the World Wildlife Fund without their authorization.  Why didn’t they authorize it?  Well, in case you couldn’t tell, it is a photo of 100 planes flying into lower Manhattan and the tagline says:

The tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11. The planet is brutally powerful. Respect it. Preserve it.

What the f-  The only other time the WWF, 9/11, and the tsunami had ever been connected before was in a game of Madlibs 16 months ago.

What on earth is DDS Brazil trying to say here?  Forget about a few commercial planes aggressively being flown into skyscrapers… instead, we should protect animals because our neglect of them somehow forced the crust of the earth to rip apart for 10 minutes, raising the ocean floor 20 meters, causing the entire planet to vibrate, and sending a tsunami that killed a quarter of a million people?

DDS Brazil, while the results of the tsunami horrifically did kill 100 times the amount of people as 9/11, comparing the effects of plate tectonics to people purposefully flying planes into buildings with the intent of killing as many people as possible – and then throwing in a photo of a panda bear to boot – is nonsensical at best.

Connecting the dots as you did would be like me creating an ad for BMW with photo of a car accident in front of the backdrop of Pol Pot’s killing fields in Cambodia with a tagline that says, “Car accidents every year kill the same amount of people worldwide as Pol Pot killed Cambodians.  Cherish your life.  Buy a BMW.”
