In what is easily becoming my favorite theme to write about, this new “study” shows us how today’s teens have been filled with so much false praise that the trusses that support their emotional mettle is made up of silly puddy. No shit.

Laura Rovi was smart enough to be lazy. An honor student at Elmhurst’s York High School, she was accustomed to getting an A even when she cruised through a class. She expected nothing less when she took a government course her sophomore year and let a classmate do all the work on their final group project, an advocacy video warning of the dangers of eating disorders. This time, though, her lack of effort earned her a C — a mark that produced a curious reaction. She wasn’t guilty. She wasn’t depressed. She was insulted.

Insulted. I think teenagers should have to go to a “This Is How Shit Used To Be, You Little Fuckers” Camp every summer where things like effort, trying and a general sense of place in the world was taught. Kids need to realize that they don’t deserve the random life they so luckily fell into, they should go out and earn that gift. Because crying and playing Rock Band isn’t going to help people get access to clean drinking water, or help us transition to new forms of energy, that’s for sure.
